8 Criteria When Considering Where to Study

Author: Luis Valenzuela  │ National Taiwan Ocean University

I came to Taiwan around five years already and with property I can say the island has made me great and helped me to achieve success in my career. Today I will let you know how everything started by the year of 2009.

I was about to start college and after spending one year in my local university. I realized that what I truly wanted is to study abroad. The reason is because I think that what you study will deeply affect your present and future. This made me think about where to study. However, many countries seemed too similar. Therefore, I decided to make a list of the criteria to consider.

I remember I made the list for the perfect place, the list included:

  1. International recognition of your studies,
  2. Wide preparation on your aptitudes to be able to succeed in the area of expertise,
  3. A place where being foreigner does not make you difference and instead make feel like if you are home,
  4. Affordable and reasonable living cost,
  5. A country with a diverse and fascinating culture,
  6. A gateway for culinary and traveling experiences,
  7. Where you can learn a new language,
  8. Where the technology is always ahead and more important a place where education equals fun.

Hence, after careful research and some advises from my parents, Taiwan stood up from the list and fulfilled my criteria.

For Luis Valenzuela, Taiwan is the country of limitless dreams. He can try everything until he reaches the sky.

For me, Taiwan is the country of limitless dreams, where everything seems possible, in other words, the sky is the limit. Since the moment you come in the airplane, everything is a learning experience. I remember watching an informative video of Taiwan and the end message was “Taiwan, touch your heart”. Believe it or not, I was already touched by only watching that video. Now almost five years in the Island I keep on learning and discovering new things.

My favorite spot in Taiwan is Taroko National Park. Perhaps because its beauty is beyond words can express. If you have watched the movie “Avatar” and became amazed of the natural sceneries shown in the movie, then I can guarantee you, Taroko will make you feel like if you are there. The waters of its rivers are as crystalline as you can get. The green of threes and nature is present everywhere. It is just a surreal experience.

Finally, one of the more remarkable things that makes Taiwan a place like no other is the friendliness and hospitality of its people. Taiwanese people are just like your extended family. They are always willing to help you no matter if they know you or not.

When I get asked, “How is Taiwan?” I will always come up with a simple answer, yet the most accurate: Taiwan is the island of beauty, greatness and diversity where you can grow into yourself, flourish, pursue, and achieve any goal.
